For some, the word “doctrine” sends a chill down the spine. It sounds dusty, rigid, or even like a battlefield for arguments. But if you look at the letters Paul wrote to young leaders like Timothy and Titus, he didn’t see doctrine as a burden—he saw it as a foundation.
For a church to be truly MEGA, it must be built on Sound Doctrine.
Without a foundation centered on the Gospel of Jesus Christ, doctrine becomes a source of disunity. But with it, we find the framework that aligns our hearts, our words, and our lives. While there are many important theological positions, I want to focus on four essential “pillars” that make us a MEGA church. These are the essentials: Salvation, the Holy Spirit, Divine Healing, and the Rapture.
1. Salvation: The Power of the Blood
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” — Romans 1:16
The word for salvation is soteria, which means to save, deliver, and bring out of peril into safety. To understand salvation, you have to understand the God who provides it. He is omnipotent and all-knowing, and from the moment of the Fall, He has been working a plan to reconcile us to Himself.
Under the old Law, animal sacrifices could cover sin, but they couldn’t transform the human heart. God had to come down in the form of a man—Jesus—to break the curse of sin once and for all. The power of God is the GRACE of Jesus. Righteousness isn’t just “right standing” through a token prayer; it is living an obedient life cleansed by the blood that makes us brand new.
2. The Holy Spirit: Our Helper and Intercessor
The Holy Spirit isn’t a “new” addition to the story; He has been present since the beginning, hovering over the waters at creation. In the Old Testament, the Spirit came upon people for specific tasks, but Jesus changed everything by promising that the Spirit would live inside us.
The Spirit’s purpose is to glorify Jesus and guide us into truth. But here is the “kicker” for a Spirit-filled people: He helps us in our weakness.
According to Romans 8:26-27, when we don’t know what to pray, the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with “groanings too deep for words.” Just as Jesus intercedes for us in heaven, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us from within, searching the mind of God to speak through us.
3. Healing: The Finished Work
Why even walk through the church doors if there is no power to heal? At a MEGA church, we believe healing is an essential doctrine. It isn’t just physical; it’s spiritual and emotional.
- Isaiah 53:5 and 1 Peter 2:24 both use the past tense: “By his wounds you have been healed.”
God sees you as the finished product! Whether it is a physical ailment or a mental struggle, healing is a provision of the blood of Jesus. As James 5 instructs, we call the elders, we anoint with oil, and we pray the prayer of faith. Healing is the faith-outgrowth of a work Jesus already accomplished on the cross.
4. The Rapture: Our Blessed Hope
The imminent return of Jesus is the catalyst of the Kingdom. People often argue that the word “Rapture” isn’t in the Bible. While the English word isn’t there, the Greek phrase for “caught up” is. In the Latin translation, that word is rapiemur—where we get “Rapture.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 describes the Lord descending with a shout and a trumpet blast, and those who are alive being “caught up” to meet Him in the air. This doctrine keeps us urgent and zealous for good works. We aren’t just living for today; we are waiting for our “blessed hope”—the appearing of our Great God and Savior.
Conclusion: Why Does This Matter?
Doctrine is the framework. It ensures that we aren’t just following our own experiences or cultural trends. Experience is not the lens through which we read Scripture; rather, Scripture is the lens through which we understand our experience.
Sound doctrine is the reason we say that all roads do not lead to God. While the world tries to create harmony through “coexisting,” we stand on the truth that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. When we own these truths, we don’t just attend a church—we become a MEGA church that changes the world.
